Do What You Do Not Want to Do
Every once and a while I notice the same idea appearing to me in various ways. When this happens, I know I need to take notice. Lately, that idea is working on your weaknesses.
In the book The Ten-Minute Manual by Janek Gwizdala says, "My entire process revolves around searching for places where my ability is weak: searching for mistakes or uncertainties, and working on improving those gaps in my playing." That is sound advice but it is not limited to music. The world of strength training has discovered the same thing. I found a similar concept from Dan John in the book Easy Strength - "You can do the old Arnold trick: Work you weakness first in a workout, or work you priorities first in a workout."
We all like to play our favorite songs or licks but does that really help us improve? Focus on your weakness to see real improvement.
What is a weakness that you could practice right now?
