Practice Slow To Play Fast?

Source: freeimages.com
Why do people say to practice slow to play fast? It is because the time between the notes is the same regardless of what tempo you are playing. What do I mean? Let’s say you need to shift from Bb to Eb. Regardless of the tempo you are playing, you need to shift instantly between the two notes. The slower tempo does not add a pause between the notes. If your concept of slow practice means you take more time between notes then you are practicing wrong. If you properly practice slowly you gain the benefit of having time to engage your brain, ear, and muscle memory as well as practicing the quick shifting between notes.
